Gas Cap - Wagon and Ranchero

Hi guys, Kenny was poking around under the seat on my new wagon and pulled out an original '63 wagon gas cap. I was thrilled since the cap currently on the car is an ugly aftermarket type.

I would like to keep this cap on my own car rather than someone else's.

I would be interested in hearing any ideas or pictures of creative ways to keep it in place. I know I could tether it but would like some way to install a locking pin or something that is released from inside the vehicle?

Ideas?

Weld it to the body and relocate the filler behind the tail light???

That picture of the hinged tail light is so freaking cool..

If I go that route I'll just put in a fill plate and bondo over the hole. The $100 or so I can get for the original cap would probably pay for any hardware I would need to modify the taillight and hinge it.
Have you had any problems with gas splash out of your cap when cornering or is that just a rumor spread by "wagon haters"?

My wagon isn't driving yet.
but there is evidence that fuel was splashed down the side, either at fill up or while driving..
I remember smelling gas when I unloaded the wagon from the trailer could have been from the filler..

I also had a mystery fluid in my tank.. it wouldn't burn and seperated like water, was heavier than gas, but was still there even after I flushed the tank. it was almost an oil base.. and it coated the tank..

That problem is solved, now its carberator and over heating issues..

Unlike the cars the wagons don't have a tank vent, so they always burp when you fill them. Why they did that is beyond me.

I've tethered mine with a cable, sort of similar to what the Mustangs did, but being this is a wagon there is no easy direct access to the back side for a locking pin. I only just got a good NOS original and so I too looked for a way to make it less attractive (I paid $160 for mine).

So maybe leave the ugly one on for driving around and just put on the nice one when showing it. People are generally more respectful of peoples cars at shows than they are when it on the street.

I've had a few nice days and the wagon is road worthy.
I only have the floors tack welded in but I can drive it..

I've discovered that with a 1/2 a tank of gas that when I make right turns gas sloshes out the filler neck and down the side of the wagon.

So its not a rumor spread by wagon haters..
Now the question is how do I fix it?

Wagon Haters! :bicker: How dare they. Hey, at some point... this might be my home!

But then I'd be driving it all over the world. Maybe drive it to Australia. :shift:
