Interior redo on my wagon

Just thought I'd generate a May thread in this forum before it turns to June... ;)

I'm hoping Jake @ OFI is soon to complete a new set of door panels for my wagon. I ordered fronts only from Dearborn, but because they had no rear patterns for the two-door wagon, they were only going to provide the fronts. Jake said he had the rear patterns, so I cancelled the Dearborn order in favor of Jake. So I hope I'll soon have a nice fresh set of gold-plated...eh, I mean Palomino door panels. The doors are going to get rebuilt inside and out and get new weatherstripping and everything else (sort of being repainted).

If you've ever wanted to partake in an interior redo or are an expert, you're welcome to stop by when I'm doing it. I'll post a comment when I'm at it. I hope I can figure it out.

I've still got to get that Mustang (I mentioned in a some previous newsletter) out of my garage before I can do this job. I'm one day away from squirting some paint on it - going with the Satin Black Rustoleum treatment on it. But then it's out of here. For that I'm thankful. I hope to get my wagon done in time for the forthcoming regional.

Actually, how many club members can you fit inside a tudor wagon at once? We may have to come up with a few exterior things to do so it doesn't get too crowded.

Well... why can't I just do small things? Before I knew it I had almost the entire interior on my wagon pulled out. I've sandblasted all the removable trim pieces and so far have etch-primed them. They've been straightened and all the little holes someone put in (for curtains?) have been welded/filled.

On a whim, went to Pull-a-Part on Saturday and after looking around decided to buy a bunch of door fuzzie (belt-line) material out of some Escorts and BroncoII/Rangers and have adapted these to fit my wagon. These will keep a lot more water out of the doors and should last longer that the cheap replacements I've done twice already. They look pretty good too.

One thing I have to fix is split door skin where it meets the brace that runs under the mirror/vent window area. Trying to do this and not get into a bunch of paint work is going to be tough. May have to paint the top of my door... :NERVOUS:

Well I finally bit the bullet and bid and bid high for a NOS gas cap for my wagon. They are never cheap. So $160 later it will hopefully arrive and be what they said it was. It looks nice on the web.

I'm still tearing things apart and cleaning and painting things. Ended up pulling the back window trim off and pulled the stainless off the rain gutter to clean those and repaint the gutter and straigten the trim pieces.

I repaired the broken "bridge" between the inner and outer driver door skins (just under the wing window) and decided to weld up the 6 extra mirror holes, which required doing some body work on the top ledge of the door. I did that already and now I'm waiting to finish the repair on the back window trim and the arrival of the gas cap and then I'll be painting all of these at once.

I've ordered back-up lenses and new buckets so I can to add back-up lights. Just have to figure out a switch now for the four speed shifter.

I'm installing driver side remote mirror and a matching passenger side mirror as well.

I'm debating on having a custom subwoofer "box" made for it. Patrick suggested seeing if I could mold it into a new spare tire cover, but there's not much room there at all, so as I mentioned to him I'm thinking about making a mirror image of the wheel cover on the driver's side. That would house a couple 8" woofers. Don't think I could get a 10" in that height. If it's too expensive I may have to go on the cheap until I save up a little more money. This is getting expensive. Being a musician and a lover of music in high fidelity, I got to have a decent sound system. My big weakness.

Well, that's about as far as I've made it so far. I'm going to see about 3-point seat belts while the interior is opened up, but that's going to be it for this pass. Really, it is. Although a new headliner would be nice and replacing the side/rear window rubbers would be a natural thing to do at the same time. And the rear floor is needing some work....

i called him to have a set made for my 61 futura as he is the only person that has the rear pattern as well..

I almost crapped myself when he quoted me something like $600..

I paid less than half that for custom panals for the ranchero..

I brought the camera down last night to start taking some pictures, but got distracted and didn't take any. Will do so tonight for sure. Things are a bit chaotic in there at the moment with all these primed parts laying all over the place.

The new door panels are still in the box, but they do look very nice. And yeah, they were about the same price you were quoted, but I could get the fronts and rears from him and nobody had any idea other than him what I could do for the rears. So I thanked George W for the economic stimulus check and signed it over to Jake (in a manner of speaking).

So I'll post some picture tomorrow of what they look like. I have a picture he sent I will post in a few minutes that convinced me to go forward.

Well, I stopped by Wesco yesterday and went though hundreds of pages of chips trying to find a color similar to Medium Palomino Poly. After two hours I finally left with a can of something (according to the chip) that looked pretty close. Got it home and dabbed a little bit on a part... and YUCK! Wasn't really that close at all. So I started playing with it and finally decided to see if I could get some shots of a couple other colors from Wesco today to try and blend my own mix. Tim at Lake City Wesco was very accommodating and supplied me with a little more black and some more silver, which that and a little white I have for the exterior on the car, I was able to make a color that I swear is dang-near exact. I haven't sprayed it, only dabbed it, but on scrap piece sitting next to a factory piece -- it's really hard with the flattening agent added to see a difference. This will (hopefully) keep me from having to also spray the dash, which I wasn't planning to do.

Paint is happening this weekend! So wish me luck!

Those are the access holes to the springs that attach to the tailgate lift straps. There are covers for them I have to paint.

what a fantastic job you are doing on the interior of your bird... would you be able to give me the contact details for jake at old falcon interiors (email phone number) . over here in australia there has been a growing interest in the us falcons but getting interior door trims for tudors is impossible locally. I'm helping a friend find black door trims and seat covers for his 67 sports coupe that needs restoring.

Nice job Roger! I'm especially anxious to see the Ranger/Escort fuzzies. As a daily driver that sits outside all of the time I really don't like the stock ones I've replaced on mine. They look pretty ratty and the ones on our 12-year old Ranger still look good. Let us know if you think they were a good idea once you have it all together and can take the time.

I do hope these new style fuzzies work. I can't see why they wouldn't (yet), but until the glass is going up and down between them one never knows. I hope to reduce the amount of water entering the door by 80% or so with these. Maybe more. Finding Ranger types not rotten was tough, but they are about $45 new online, so if they do work I will be buying a set of new ones to put in since these were already wearing out more than I'd have liked. I actually could only find decent inner Ranger and all the rest are Escort, but all Ranger would have been ideal.

Yeah I hope they work well. I cleaned all the glass today and did a dry fit to see if things look OK. So far so good. I'll take a bunch of pictures of before and after and show what I did front and rear. It'll be a combination of clips and black adhesive. There was no easy way to get new holes on the outside lip of the front door. The Ranger fuzzies have clips I could relocate to match the original holes, but the Escort retainers were just fold-over tabs. So I was able to drill new holes on the back windows (inner and outer) do match the tabs, but the front outer will have to be glued until I can find good Ranger outers that are not all brittle. What you gain in water shielding, but you loose the stainless shine for the black rubber edge.

Progress Report:

I sprayed bed-liner on it by late Sunday night. Tonight I painted the floor, the wheel wells, under the quarter windows and the filler panel between the bed and the seat panels. I'm amazed at how close I got that paint to match (I mixed it myself). Used a bit too much flatening agent, but otherwise it is exact.

Well I've started putting things together, but I really want to find a bed liner of some kind so I'm not scraping up the bed. Rubber or carpet... that is the question. If I could find a carpet of the same color, that would be great. Time to call Jake again, I guess.

OH, I also won a set of NOS wagon tail lights yesterday with back-up lenses and chrome spears (sorry if you are reading this someday and it was you I outbid... no offense :o). So when these arrive I'll be selling the less than spectacular Dearborn lenses.

Also got new buckets from Dearborn and these too are less than spectacular. Don't get why someone couldn't have polished them before having them anodized. I'm tempted to do it myself. They were quite dull and showed die-press scratches. No effort spent at all to make them "show quality." :confused:

Thanks for the tip about binding. That would be the professional thing to do, wouldn't it be...

If I attach it, I was thinking to use snaps, but may take you up on the Velcro instead. May only need a rubber pad like I use under throw rugs.

Today's update:

Wow, the weekend went fast... Spent all day yesterday cleaning the door jambs of the old weatherstripping (what a PITA!) and prepping the jambs for paint. While doing so I concluded this winter I am going to be stripping the rear quarter panels and pulling out the quarter windows. There's a lot of surface rust under the drivers side quarter panel and up under the window rubber. Got to deal with that.

Well, as you see from the pictures, I've painted those door jambs. On the body side, since later this year I'm going to strip them to bare metal, I only painted them by hand. BY HAND! Yes, with a very fine brush. I know, weird... but hey it would have been really hard to mask that off for what I would gain. It actually looks OK.

So I've started painting the trim as well. Just about done with them. Should have that all done tomorrow.

Yesterday went to the Pull-a-Part again to look for retractable seat belt's Couldn't find anything in my color with shoulder straps, but did find some really nice lap belts for the rear that will retract. So I got those.

Upper right... $150 gas cap. Left are the two "wings" that are usually to the left and right of the the rear window. These always seem to get bent when someone opens the gate without the window down all the way. So I took them off to weld those and repaint them. A "while I'm at it job."

The new sound system is starting to go in. Those are cross-overs for the speakers going into the center, where the original speaker would have gone. Odd arrangement, but the place I bought all this does this on collector cars all the time and he claims that with the kick-panel speakers and the center as you see below the sound is incredible. These center speakers (Morel) are "supposed to be" the best car speakers you can get for the price. The demo's sounded good.

The hole's not quite big enough, but the guy at the stereo store said it won't make no difference. If you notice the size of the voice coil in these speakers. They are 4" speakers and the voice coils are over 2".

Through the glass above you can see how much is clipped. Hope it sounds good.

Well... there's more going in every day. I have all the parts cleaned and painted, so with a little more wiring I can start sealing it all up. More pictures to come...

Well, here's the latest. Things are going together pretty well now that all the hard stuff is done. Still have a bit to do, but shoudln't be an issue getting it done in time for the show. May have to upgrade my charging system though... :WHATTHE:

Here's a picture of the new 1/0 gauge wire installed to feed to the amps. I've got yet to install the 1/0 gauge grounds, but they are made up.

Here's where the 1/0 gauge snakes into the car... just behind the shifter hump. The other wires in the hump will connect to the back-up light switch if it ever comes in time. The orange wire coiled up are speaker wires. Dynamat is installed front to rear, but I did that years ago. Want a quiet car? That's what you need to do.

Here's the amps installed and all wired up. I think if you look close to the left and the right of the picture you'll see the new retractable seat belts I added. They j u s t fit between the panels and the seat base.

This is the temporary sub panel. They want (gulp) $1500 to do the mirror image of the spare tire cover, so that's going to have to wait for maybe a very long time. This one cost me $8 and one hour of time.

Just sitting there for the picture. The paint to match the vinyl doesn't exist, so I used three different colors and made it work. You can kind'a see the front panel just ahead of the wheel well.

I set the system up to be able to turn off the amps and set the deck to power up these under dash speakers. Normally these are not powered up, but if I do a drive-in theatre (since I live next door to the last one in the world) I wouldn't be able to feed the amps for very long without running the engine. May not be enough (as I said) even if the engine is running. Hopefully it will, but I doubt it.

Here's the rear door panel(s). One thing I had to do was to add the new windlace and since the rear section of the rear door panels were not "finished" so I fashioned a length of windlace and glued it to the back side of the panel so it would cover the unfinished edge. Lookes far better that way, I think. You can see the seat belt retractor as well.

So the vacation ends tonight and though I didn't get it 100%, I'd say I'm at about 99% for what I started. Still have a few things I plan to do before the show, but they're mechanical things. So here's some of the latest pics.

Here's a couple pictures showing the new taillights I won off eBay. I need a switch to actuate them, which I ordered on-line... but when a package arrived yesterday - no switch. It's backordered! Kind of bums me out 'cause I could have bid on one from ebay that only went for $15. :bicker: I could use one if anyone has one (hint-hint).

Also fired up the stereo. It rocks! :rocker:These two 8" Fosgate speakers, as a sub, sound just fine. May not do the $1500 custom sub enclosure (like there was any doubt in my mind about that anyway). :p

Thought I'd post that in the end I had a lot of nice comments on my wagon. Unfortunately the thing was so jam-packed with PA equipment during two of the shows (Friday and Sunday) that it wasn't easy to show off anything.

Also on Sunday as I was wiping the car down I noticed I must have overtightened the rear-view mirror and cracked my windshield. :doh:

Yeah, that's how I felt. I'm not sure cracks are repairable like daisies are. If not it'll be coming out this winter maybe anyway to prep for a new headliner. I'll be also replacing the rear-quarter glass rubber and repainting the rear quarter panels. If all goes well anyway.

Roger, I was re-reviewing your "interior" thread again today, as I'm gathering pieces to redo my Ranchero, when I noticed that it appears you had the "chrome" bezel for your instrument panel re-plated. If this is true, would you share where you had it redone? My particular dash is the Deluxe version and I have 4 pieces to redo, but would like to follow-up on resources as my dash pieces are pretty poor looking.

I have gathered almost all pieces from Dearborn and dearly hope it comes out as great looking as yours!

I redid it myself. It's not rechromed. I just used that "Almost chrome" spray paint and masked everything off and "sanitized" it. Looks 95% better than it did, but have never even considered spending the money to go chrome.

As I mentioned in the Tis the season thread my boss cancelled the holiday break this year, so my two free days are not free at the moment. Will have to try for a weekend in the new year I guess.

I suspected that the picture was a professional "chrome job", and it does indeed look great. Also, after reading Roger's reply, I went poking around on the internet using "almost chrome" as my search string and I believe that product may no be longer available. However, I found another link that is VERY intriguing to me. It involves using a product that, as far as I can tell from the website clips, is very, very close to the real thing and for our purposes, to redo our dash pieces, of which I have four, appears to produce a shine that is amazing. Take a look at this link:

I don't believe that I will ever be feeling so flush that I will pay $350 or more per piece to have my Deluxe dash redone, but I will probably give this method a try. It looks to me as thought the professionalism will be limited by the quality of the masking and re-painting the black accents in the pieces (I have almost no, none, zip, zilch experience doing that kind of masking and it will definitely be a learning experience). Anyway, please let me know what you think of the clips at this site.

Yeah, that looks like some pretty cool stuff. For the price it had better work!

I painted my dash about 10 years ago, so it doesn't surprise me that the paint I used is off the market. I see a lot of imitators, but have never tried any others since. One good thing about the almost chrome stuff was that it didn't leave that silver residue when you touch it, but it was far from almost being like chrome.

Sorry it may have appeared that the post with the picture looked like I was indicating it was my dash. Was actually replying to the post prior to the post with the pic.

Roger, I was pretty impressed by the clips showing the part being "chromed". I think I am going to give that stuff a shot. It probably won't be until the weather is a bit warmer as I have no heated area other than the inside of my home, and I know painting is better in heated areas. Anyhow, I will let you all know after I use the stuff, one way or the other.

I agree, the photo's look really good on the web site. I'm a little tapped after Christmas, but I may get some by Spring-time myself. I think it might be better than to be just shy of 50 degrees when you spray it too.

I never did finish with my stereo, specifically the subwoofer. I'd always planned to build a mirror image of the spare tire cover and put a speaker into that (sort of Pat's idea, that one).

I was staring at it on Saturday (and even after having spent $100+ on materials) I just couldn't motivate myself. I'm too burned out, I guess. But as I sat there I looked up on my wall-o-shelves and eye'd this Bazooka sub tube I've had for about 10 years (never put it in anything) and pulled that down to see how that would fit in there. Not bad, really.

So I removed the amp from it (wimpy thing) and replaced the speaker in it with a new 10" Alpine R-series dual voice coil sub capable of handling the 1000 watts the amp can put out -- and this is what I came up with. Looks pretty good.

Who knows, maybe I'll just leave it be. Haven't heard it yet, but I'm sure it will be better than the dual 8" thingy I did (quickly) a couple years ago.

Thanks Bill. I'm liking it more and more.

I have listened to it now and it is pretty awesome sounding in there. Thing is, I don't listen to it loud or anything, like the kids who drive by rattling my windows, but clarity, for me, is pretty important. It is all of that.

I need to take some pictures of what I did up front that differs from what all the pictures above show. All the above was done before the Regional meet a couple years ago and I never really liked the way it sounded. The "salesman" at the stereo shop near me said I would think it was awesome, and I guess it would have been if it was 1965 again. But it isn't 1965, so I ripped it all out last year and did it all over.
