I was initially going to re-install a flathead back in the 49 F1 Ford truck that I bought but now I might be leaning at installing a 289/302/351/? with a C4 auto or maybe a stick? Two reasons I might go that way. 1. The initial cost of rebuilding a flathead is a lot more than I realized. 2. Drivability of the old engine/tranny.
I probably will lose some money from those folks that want a flathead. Still groping for the answer.
SOOOOO....anyone have a running 289/302etc sitting around that you want to get rid of for a decent cost? Thanks Larry

I have a 393 based on a 351W roller block and a C4 sitting around.

I know where there's a 289ci 4bbl engine that can be gotten cheap (negotiate with my son). It's from a '67 Mustang that was a C-4 car. It's complete.... minus carb, disributer, starter, and maybe exhaust manifolds. On a stand right now.

Thanks for the messages. Pat, what all is with the engine you have. is it just a block, short block, long etc?
The 289 also sounds good. Is it in decent running shape or will it need repairs/rebuild.
Thanks again. Larry

All that is known about the 289 is that the "Previous Owner" said it was a good running engine when it was replaced by a 351 Cleveland engine with a pretty wild cam (Too wild to be a decent town driver. My son replaced cam). It has been kept dry on his engine stand. I'd be tempted to try and fire it up and make my own judgement from there if I was getting it.

And if you would like the (289 4v) engine, all you have to do is come pick it up and it's yours. The P/O said it was solid but I don't plan to do anything with it. it was numbers matching for a car I recently sold.
If nothing else, the heads are worth something but I really don't want to mess with it.
I've got a picker at the house so if you come with a truck or a trailer, we can load it easily and off you go. I live right near Boeing in S. Everett.

Sounds good. I work from home and am not traveling this week so most anything can work. Will be around all day tomorrow and home in the evening tomorrow as well.
I'll give you a call tomorrow to set something up.

Larry -
Just so you know I was yanking Reed's chain in relationship with this motor. I was offered it as well (since I've been building his Mustang(s) for him), but I never committed one way or the other to taking this motor off his hands. Have had way too many irons in the fire to give it much thought. Current projects took precedent over future [gosh, what will I/could I do with that] projects.
Suffice it to say I am very-much OK with this arrangement and just wanted to needle Reed a little with my last post, because I never did say 'yea' or 'nay' to the offer. I know you'll put it to use long before I ever would. I may have some left-over bits from my 289 build if you want them. I know I have a semi-radical cam collecting dust. Not sure what else.
Anyway, didn't want anyone [hind-sight being 20/20 as it is] to think I was bummin' - 'cause I'm not remotely so.

Thanks for the offer of the other parts Roger and if it turns out that I won't be using the engine for any reason it will be yours. No problem with needling Reed and thanks again. I will be picking up the engine this week so thanks a whole lot Reed. Larry

I picked up the 289 from Reed and it looks very good. It is missing several parts that I would like to pickup if anyone has some spare good parts available for a reasonable price. The distributor on the engine is toast so need that. I would like to add an aftermarket intake and need a four barrel carb. I need a starter, fuel pump, headers (preferably not stock).
Reed, I am sending you a private message about the top loader tranny you have for sale.
Any help will be appreciated. Larry

Larry. I have some shorty small block headers I picked up for $25 at the Monroe swap meet a few years back. Impulse buy. You're welcome to them and any other parts I have in my shed. I even have a small block FMX tranny (supposedly rebuilt) you can have. The extra weight the truck won't mind about. Have a few starters too. Probably everything you need. All free will offering... so to speak. Carburetor or 3 as well. Come and get 'em!

Larry - Just realized I never heard back from you. Not sure if you're still looking for stuff or have it all arranged already. I was out of town until yesterday, so if you need anything - let me know.

Thanks Roger, I've been so busy trying to get the grade in front of the new garage finished to pour concrete soon. Sorry I haven't gotten back to you and yep I still want the parts. I will try and call sometime this week if that works. Larry

They finished checking my flathead block for cracks and the other parts were checked over and cleaned. I went and looked at the block and it had at least 10 big cracks. :WHATTHE: They felt bad about such horrible news that they only charged me a small amount to clean all the parts.
Now, I need another 48-53 Ford Flathead block. If anyone knows of one or sees one for sale that looks "safe" for rebuild let me know. Or, another full engine will work. Thanks Larry

What about the 289? Wasn't that going in first?
BadBird

Very probable that the 289 will go in this truck. But I was still going to rebuild the flathead to either use in my next truck to sell or the next one that I can keep. It is just very expensive to rebuild a flathead so it will be a lot longer process.
If I can find a donor block or engine I can start getting the machine work done, then as money becomes available I can buy parts. Larry
