Hey gang,
I've got Denny's bird in my shop. If any one could spare a little bit of time, his wife needs advice on where to go with the motor. Denny told her he blew it up.
I don't think so, but can't turn the key and look under the hood at the same time. I've got the next 2 weekends free. Sheila and I would appreciate it.

Same here Bill - but may have time next Saturday morning-ish, but already have 3 things wanting the same time of me this weekend - not sure who's gonna win. Will have to wait and see what the week deals me.

Just conversed with Roger regarding this...... Will 9:30 - 10:00 work for you? What kind of tools will at our disposal? Maybe we'll just bring some general stuff? Do you have any info regarding what it did when it died? Is it a six or eight cylinder?

There's a bit of science to staining a table - you could'a just combined them. But the lava spewing volcano should be cool too.

Is it a six? If so, my '62 has reached the "terminal frame" stage, and the 3 speed and engine are available.

It's a 347 stroker and has a broken crank.

The first clue to the problem was while turning it over - not - seeing the fan spin So it appears the crank must be broken somewhere in the middle. At least a couple pistons are being driven, but clearly not the front two cylinders. We didn't go much further than to determine where it broke since it was a foregone conclusion that the motor has to come out and see how extensive the damage might be. Bill will be getting this info over to Denny's wife to see what she's wanting to do from here. I extended the invite to offer a tech day to his wife to pull it and tell her what the damage is - but that will be for her to decide. It's going to be a couple grand no matter which way she goes.

I think it was a 331 stroker, but right now it may be a 83 or a 165.

I have 5.0 crank and rods for free if you need , just polish crank and check the rods for size...

Wow! what caused the broken crank? Not that common is it to have that catastrophic of a failure?

Thanks Roger and Gene for coming out. I emailed Shirley, and she agrees that a 289 or 302 would be plenty for her grandson. She also wanted to thank Roger and Gene for coming out. She won't be able to do anything until the end of April.
She's looking for something reliable, since her grandson would be using it as his driver. He would like to use as many of the cosmetic stuff on the new engine :3g:

Bill - I would still suggest a diagnostic disassembly of that motor prior to making a final call. Could be that many internal parts might want to be used as well - depending on the internal damage found. Things like heads and intake may be reused.

I have a 69 302 block, crank, and pistons which could be a quick and dirty overhaul (rings, bearings and gasket set) and be done with it. I'd use the heads on the 331 for this. There are a lot of options, I'm sure, but this might be the least expensive for her.

Don't know how wild of a cam Denny had in his engine. I have my takeout cam and lifters from a recent change-out that I would donate if his is too wild for the grandson. It is a fairly mild grind by the seat of my pants, but doesn't pull wonderful vacuum (around 15.5 - 16in.).
