Part Out Party - Part Two

Just a quick mention that a couple of us plan to be heading back over to Sequim on Saturday to visit Steve at his powder-coat shop - and so I can pick up a few parts I left behind at his house and hack off a couple pieces I didn't get to hack off last time we were there. Nothing at all like the last part out party.

If anyone is interested in visiting a powder coat shop -- Steve will be doing my rear axle housing, backing plates, and my Gene donated 5-lug wheels (in red). We may be doing a couple parts for Patrick if they get here in time. We we're hoping for a few more parts from other people to make it worth firing up the bake ovens.

We'll be leaving bright and early Saturday morning -- so if you have anything you want coated - speak now or forever hold your peace. :D

I think right now we have room for two more people - assuming Gene still wants to go... and drive. If it's just us two, we may consider driving my pickup over - since Steve has a friend who may have an interest in it. And Gene, you are also free to do something else if you need to.

Yes get your parts to Roger, this is your chance for some CHEAP powder coating. All labor and equipment use is free just going to pass a donation plate to recoup powder costs. Any donation is fine I realy don't care that much, I just want to help the club out because you all have help me so much so far. (lot more help will be needed I am sure)

steve, I have two small trim parts for the dash of my 51 ford truck that are potmetal and are chrome, can you powder over or does the chrome need to come off ? I bead blasted the small one and it don't look bad, but not the larger one, I like the chrome powder you showed me last summer..thanks john h

They need to be blasted. I stood in front of my little cabinet for about two hours just to mostly finish one... During the process my vacuum bag ripped and I didn't notice for some time. When I finally did glance up, I was surprised I couldn't see my clock... dusty!

With the weather the way it is and being slammed at work, I'd have a hard time getting them to Roger in time.

I'm certainly not in a rush, I bet Roger will have more to do after he sees your results, I'll get in on the second batch... or just pay you shop rates.

I'm still planning to go. I'm very interested to see the process Steve's gonna show us. I'm going to get my spare tire dismounted if I get time and take it to be coated also. I can either take my truck or you can take yours.... doesn't matter to me. I just volunteered so others could go and only take one vehicle.

Gene - I don't need to bring my truck over there now, so if you are willing to drive -- I'll get the ferries and breakfast (and lunch, and dinner, and...).

Hoping the weather doesn't turn too rough. How's the snow on the west side there Steve? Mild here tonight, but who knows what the day will bring.

FWIW, I've got 4WD and studs on all 4s, but would not be able to haul much of the other stuff back - only some of it. We can get creative stuffing stuff in, I guess. But that is an option. As long as we get the stuff off the other cars I want to keep from going away so you can get rid of the rest, you'll be happy - right? [thumb]

I think I'd also like to trim a big piece of sheet-metal off the other wagon, just for spare patch panel material. Like the part that's flipped over. :)

Oh, and I'll be at the office tomorrow (may be by myself there for all I know) - so if anyone wants to deliver stuff there they can call me first -- or drive over to my house during the day and put stuff into the back of the Ranchero in my carport - with their name and color they want on it. We'll get it there and back to you.

Well the snow bit us in the A** yesterday. Got about 8" out at my place and about 6" in town. The Highway is mostly clear a few icy spots. Surface streets are solid sheets of ice. I made it to work (thank god for the ovens) and I expect to see the main highway clear today. I heard a rumor of some snow or rain showers maybe Sat. morning?? But I am still ready, just have to clear some snow to get at the parts cars.
Jeff whenever you or anyone else in the club is ready I will gladly coat your stuff for cheap. As long as we are not ordering special colors or things of that nature we are fine. I have about 125 colors in stock so shouldn't be a problem.
I will keep an eye out on the roads and conditions and keep you posted.

I don't have studs on all four, but I do have 4x4 since the last time we went, so I'll plan on driving.:shift: I'm sure Steve's going to have the roads cleared for us b/4 we get there.[yay]

So it has been snowing here all day. Not bad but about another 2-3" so far. Tomorrow is suppose to be sunny all day but on about 38 degrees. Hopefully the roads will melt off. Not sure what your conditions are over there. Sounds like the snow won't be until you get to Kingston.
Any how I am still a go so unless you guys say other wise I will expect you around 9:30ish like last time.:NERVOUS:

John; sorry I missed your post. As long as the chrome is good and not pealing off. If there is any pitting in the metal that would need to be fixed first. I would not use the chrome powder for exterior use as it is not UV stable. It requires a clear coat to protect it and that clear coat dulls down the shine very bad. Looks more like brushed aluminum then...

Here are the latest conditions: COLD; Highway is clear should dry off with the sun today. About 6" of snow left at the house maybe I will get lucky and some of it will melt today.
Looks like some snow or rain Saturday afternoon?? So I think if you guys are up for it should not be to bad to travel over. I have everything set so just let me know for sure. Thanks Steve..

It's clear and cold here - I think if we get no more precipitation (in any form) then the roads between here and there will be fine. There's plenty of traffic to dry 'em out.

I got the tires off the two rims that had tires - and almost died in the process. It was snowing in white-out form about 5:30 last night (after sand-blasting all the parts) and I decided to stop at the Les Schwab on the north end of the lake in Kenmore. I'm sitting in the center lane trying to get over against traffic - waiting for kindness to arrive. Finally I'm given some of that and I start sneaking across 3-lanes of roadway. It really is hard to see 20-feet and I get into the bus lane and I realize as I get there a bus has arrived -- seemingly out of nowhere and it is doing its full 40+ miles an hour - snow or no snow. All I can say is I am thankful for studded tires. Any slippage last night and you'd have been voting in a new president. :NERVOUS:

Anyway, the guys at the tire store saw it all and pulled the tires off for free. Hence maintaining a balance in the universe.

Glad that balance was at least maintained.. AWD or FWD or studed are a great help in those few occasions we get the white stuff.
I will keep an eye out in the AM for you. I'll try to get the shop at least warm for the cutting portion. At the powder shop no problemo...:WHATTHE:

Had a fun trip over to Steve's place today - first spending a couple hours cutting the quarter panels off the remaining part of the gray Ranchero -- it is now a goner. Then loaded up those and few other odd bits floating around after the last part-out party into the back of Gene's nifty new pickup - and then it was off to the powder coat shop.

First of all, let me say Steve has got a nice little shop there. A couple ovens, one big enough for a car and a sand-blast booth big enough as well. He made quick work of sand-blasting the 5 rims while Gene did a little last-minute weld clean-up on the 8" housing. I was tasked with masking off and hanging the small parts on the hang-racks while he basted the housing. Was nice to have a good sand blast booth; Steve was done blasting before I got anything hung.

Then we were onto the powder. We each got a hand at it - as you see below. The parts turned out pretty good... though in the excitement I forgot to snap any done pics. I'll take a picture of my rims tomorrow and one with my rings and hubcaps. Gene and I barely made it back as the snow began to accumulate. Another hour and we would have surely abandoned to truck on the side of the road and walked.

Thanks a lot Steve for sharing your business with [a few of] us. Pretty soon, we'll be converging on you to do something on your delivery - but does it have to be sanding??? :(

Went to Steve's place with Roger yesterday. It's fun watching Steve and Roger with a sawzall! Major destruction! After cutting on the on donor Ranchero for a bit, we loaded up and went to Steve's powder coating shop. INTERESTING!! I even got to hold the gun and shoot my own spare wheel. You that didn't go missed a good day. The weather even cooperated. We didn't get any more snow on us until we got home. Thanks Steve and Roger. It was great.[yay]

I picked that cup holder at the early-bird swap last weekend. It had a couple Mobil gas horses on it and they must have thought it made it an antique. So I talked them down - but it is a 60's thing I think. Powder coated it the same color as the wheels. I picked up a couple antique repop stickers for it. Don't have any specific plans for it, since I have all cars with shifters in the humps.

And what reflection? :WHATTHE: Trust me, it's 40 degrees in my garage, I'm wearing many layers of clothing! :confused: Stood out there all day wire wheeling bolts of their rust and organizing them in preparation for the big Ranchero whirlwind.... coming soon to a town near you.

The parts turned out well, and that wheel looks bad *** with the cap and ring on it. Genes blue wheel looks great as well.
289?? Selling it?? Tell me more? I have a 5.0 I was going to use but having second thought on the fuel injection. I may be interested in it, unless Gene has his heart set on it.
On the powder shop stuff. I f any of you need stuff done, I will beat any other shops price for club members. I know I am not a member yet but as soon as my national gets back I'll be sending it in. As far as blasting I have a inside room that is 10X10X20, and use a pressure pot in it that holds about 300lbs of media. I actually blasted my whole car in it. Also a 48" glass bead cabinet.
Roger you should have brought all those nuts and bolts we could have cleaned them in the small cabinet??? Oh well maybe next time. Anyway thanks for coming over next time I need to get over your way..:BEER:

Yeah the caps are nice. From a 64 Merc Meteor they say on the back of one. Never noticed that until last night. The guy told me they were from a Mercury, but I assumed a Comet. They are all really straight with only slight indentations from probably palming them back on the rim. I haven't snapped them on yet. I'll wait until the tires are on them. They will shine up nicely.

I was thinking the same thing last night as I stood there buffing for 5 hours straight that the blaster cups you had I need to get for our blaster here. Did you buy those or make them? I need me one.

Also - I don't remember much about the 289 that John mentions - but John, you should also mention what the bolt-pattern is for the bell housing. If it is really a '64 289, it may be that rare (not as-in "valuable" rare) one-year bolt pattern. If someone really wanted that block to mate up with the "also rare one-year C4 or manual transmission bell-housing" - it might be valuable rare to them. Anyway, you need to verify this and post it before going forward with selling it. And you should post the sales ad in the parts for sale section too. It'll get lost here.

On a side note - any of you who know my friend Bill, who was at the original Parting Party - and has come to a few club events with me - I just heard this morning he's in the hospital over on the Olympic side and it doesn't look good for him. Don't yet know much, other than he has pulled though a lot of things in his life just as bad, but if you are someone who prays, perhaps you can send up a prayer for him. And if you are someone who curses, then send up a curse for him. Whatever you do, I'd appreciate it.

John, thanks for the offer of the 289 for sale. However, I already have another V-8 to build if I choose to go that route. I'm undecided what I'm going to do, but keeping my eye out for a pushrod 4.0L and 5-speed. Kinda unusual, I know, but that's the way I'm leaning. I want to do something unusual.

Bill - I don't think you'd want to afford this thing - though I don't know yet how I'll use it. I paid more for it that I should have.

There is no date stamp on it, it just seem like I've not seen anything like this in steel for a long time.

In my wagon I bought one of those ashtray cup holders they sell to slide in the ashtray slot, but I didn't like it there, so I wrapped the slide-in part in anti-skid material - and set it just under the passenger seat edge. Stays put and is hidden a little.

OK. I'll bite. Point out to me how you (and Jeff) see these kind of reflections in photos that have none. What have I been missing? Have you and Jeff contracted a rare disease? You both might be afflicted with extreme "Falconitis"? This may be associated with "round bodies"? When that foto was taken I was out in my garage with the door open, and was definately not "flashing" the neighborhood.

Oh yea, the wheels really look great! I'm gonna have to do mine some day. I really like the trim ring/center cap combo where some of the color shows through.

Does the powder coat chip every time you pop the wheel cover off and on? My paint does and then the rust starts...

I love that cup holder also. If not for the complicated drawn rings around the round cup holes, it looks fairly easy to duplicate. Can't wait to see it in person.

Maybe you can make a little pillow cushion to put under it so it can ride in the seat next to you. Shame to leave it in the garage.

As far as the powder coat, It is a lot tougher that paint. If the covers don't have any sharp edges on them worst they will do is scuff the powder. If they have sharp points on the little retainer deals they may scratch inot the powder but they power should not "chip"..

I have not pressed the caps and trim rings into the wheel yet, but having been exposed for years to powder coated products - it is tough as heck, but not impervious to being damaged. I will always have trim rings and caps, so I will always be covering the scratches. Not apt to rust though.

If you have a clutch pedal set up from your parts rig that you might want to sell. I wouldn't mind buying it. Don't need it anytime soon.. I'm parts hording for a future five speed swap. I'll need the z-bar stuff too.. v8 though...

There is still a pedal assy in the car at Steve's place. After looking at the one I just pulled out of my Ranchero - I was already thinking I might really need that other one to make one good one out of two (hint-hint Steve). So maybe I can refurbish both one I get them both. We'll see. They z-bar are both from a 6-cylinder car, but maybe Steve has parted a V8 car or two.

I can also contact Mark in Burien, who I got the entire v8 front-end and rear axle from to see if he snagged those parts before he let that car go to the crusher. He typically tries to pull anything of use out of the cars before the go. That car had a 289 and a 3-speed manual (3.03) tranny in it.

Bought a pedal assembly clutch zbar and pivots from a 63 futura that was at the wrecking yard today.
I also snagged the heater box and turn signal switch.

It has a good pass fender, the futura dash trim, the padded dash trim, two back doors.

I also found a 65 v8 fairlane.
Itwas complete from carb to oil pan. Fan to rear diff. If anyone wanted to swap to a vi car this. Car has everything you need. Its a 289 car with a cruiseomatic. Anyone looking for a 5 bolt bell or complete tranny? Pullnsave in spokane wa has one.

I want to go back for the engine mounts if they will work in a falcon. I also want the driver side exhaust manifold..

It's sad to realize that the reality was the Ranchero we hacked to pieces was the "better of the two" when it came right down to it. But, the important thing I have to realize is I still could only have made only one good one from the two.

I brought the entire cowl and dash home this weekend from this gray car. The cowl is in really pretty decent shape. I wish (and I have not ruled it out yet) I could take the entire cowl - complete with dash - and swap the two without drilling 500 spot welds. I'll be looking closely at this very soon..
